A Little Bite of Bliss
Anyone who has had the pleasure of eating a macaron knows that they spark bliss for all the senses. With their delicate meringue shells, decadent yet restrained fillings, and variety of colors and flavors, including chocolate, citrus, and pistachio, they look as good as they taste. It’s little to wonder how macarons have remained a crowd favorite since they were developed way back in the 8th century!
Macarons may look simple, but they’re all about balance and proportion. Macarons should deliver just the right amount of nutty sweetness, with a smooth, vibrant texture that’s both crispy and creamy at all once. The shells are made from almond flour, egg whites, and sugar, with the filling crafted from jam, buttercream, or ganache. With their airy, melt-in-your-mouth texture, macarons pair perfectly with a cup of tea or coffee or a glass of bubbly at a high tea or special event.
Macarons: not your Average Macaroon
It’s an easy mistake to make, but macarons and macaroons (and, indeed, Emmanuel Macrons) are very different things. Macarons, pronounced with a short “o” sound in the final syllable, are a traditional meringue-based cookie with a creamy filling. Macaroons, pronounced with a long “oo” sound in the final syllable, are small cookies made with shredded coconut. While delicious, they are probably not what you mean to order at your friendly French patisserie!
