You might know it better as a King Cake, but at PAUL, we use the traditional French name: Galette des Rois. Associated with Epiphany or Twelfth Night, this decadent French dessert dates back seven centuries – although ours are baked fresh daily!
Galette des Rois is a deliciously sweet French pastry easily spotted by its golden paper crown. Traditionally, this dessert features buttery puff pastry filled with rich almond cream, but apple and brioche variations are also popular. The specific variety of Galette des Rois you bite into depends on where you call home: each region of France has its own unique recipe!
Let’s Come Together Over a Galette des Rois
In the US, King Cake is associated with the colorful Mardi Gras event – and is brightly decorated to match. In France, the slightly more restrained Galette des Rois is enjoyed on January 6th in celebration of the Epiphany, said to mark the arrival of the Three Kings in Bethlehem. Families come together on or around this date to share their galette, into which is baked a small ceramic baby charm (the “fève”). Whoever finds the charm in their slice of cake is deemed King or Queen for the day – thus the name of the cake and the paper crown that famously adorns this popular confection. The charms are popular collector items, so if you find one, hold on to it!
